Our Program

Location & Description

Respite House is located at 1408 Chicago Street, Valparaiso, Indiana. The structure was built in 1978 and is located on a lot consisting of .67 acres. The interior has been completely reconfigured in the summer and fall of 2009, to best meet our needs for a men’s halfway house. Given the nature of the surrounding properties, it is somewhat isolated, yet centrally located.

Respite House is a one-level structure with adequate living space for 15 residents. The on-site director has a separate living quarters and office space. There is a common living room area, a common kitchen and dining area, a computer-work room, large bathroom facilities,

a public restroom area and meeting space for programming and 12 Step Fellowship Meetings.

Respite House is a non-smoking facility. Residents and Visitors will be required to smoke in the designated area outside.

Residents are assigned chores and other duties, inside and outside the house, concerning the general maintenance and upkeep of the premises. Additionally, they will be responsible to keep their individual areas, common areas, and any common area after their individual use, free of clutter.

The Respite House is staffed by an Executive Director, Director and Two Assistant Directors. The Director and Assistants reside at the House. The Executive Director is responsible to assist in the implementation of Policies and

Procedures, as established by the Board of Directors. The Director and Assistants are responsible for the day to day operations of Respite House.

Many of the programs we have implemented are available through community resources, and are either free of charge or very cost effective.

We are focusing on addressing the individual needs of each resident in order to provide them with the best opportunity for recovery.

Self Help 12 Step Meetings

Residents will be required to actively pursue a recovery program through the local 12 Step Fellowships (AA or NA) during their residency. Meeting attendance, in addition to in-house

programming, will be mandatory. Residents are required to attend a minimum of five meetings a week, obtain a sponsor and be actively working the 12 Step Program.

Drug Court

Respite House, including its Officers, Board of Directors and Staff, is committed to working in cooperation with the Porter County Drug Court Program to provide specific services to those individuals participating in the Adult Drug Court Program.

Respite House shall maintain flexibility in their programming and scheduling, as it pertains to Drug Court participants, in order to enable them

to comply with the requirements and goals of the Drug Court Program, while at the same time remaining in compliance with the rules and regulations of Respite House. In summary, it is the intent of Respite House to do everything within our power to work in conjunction and cooperation with the Drug Court Program in meeting the needs and requirements of those participants.
