Respite House Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of Respite House is vested with the responsibility to establish policy and procedure and oversee the general management and operations of Respite House – a Halfway House for Men. In general, the role of the Board of Directors may be described as follows:

  1. Establishing general Policy and Procedures and overseeing the implementation thereof; Establishing the Goals and Objectives of Respite House; Hiring the Executive Director and Director, and establishing and/or overseeing the implementation of Policy and procedures concerning staff; Establishing the policy and procedure for the day to day operation of Respite House as a residential halfway house for men with substance abuse problems.
  2. Establish and implement policy and procedure for financial development and fundraising, insuring that Respite House is adequately funded in order to meet the Goals and Objectives of the organization.
  3. Monitoring the implementation of established policy and procedure to insure both compliance by staff and residents and the effectiveness of those policies and procedures in achieving the goals and objectives of the Organization.

The emphasis for the Board of Directors is not necessarily the day to day details of operations, but rather the Goals, Objectives, Strategies and Policies of the Organization as a whole. The Director is responsible for the implementation of the Board’s overall planning and policy, and the Board is responsible to insure that the Director is accountable for the implementation.

The function of the Board includes the following:

  1. Formulate and approve long-range goals and objectives. Establish annual objectives and priorities.
  2. Formulate and adopt policy and operating procedures for Staff and Residents.
  3. Select and Hire a Director and/or Executive Director, clearly communicating the expectations of the Board regarding the operation of the facility, consistent with the goals and objectives of the Organization, and holding the Director accountable, through regular review and communication, for the implementation of policy and procedures.
  4. Develop financial resources and strategies for achieving the goals and objectives of the organization.
  5. Adopt and monitor a financial operating plan and annual budget.
  6. Monitor the achievement of the goals and objectives of the organization.
  7. Operate within the parameters of the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the Organization.
  8. Protect and preserve the assets of the Organization.
  9. Cooperate and collaborate with other community resources and organizations, both public and private, who are addressing the same or similar community needs and issues as Respite House.
  10. Maintain community awareness of the goals of the organization and the services provided.

The Responsibilities and powers of the board include the following:

  • Establish policies for administering the programs and services which are in harmony with the general purposes of Respite House.
  • Employ the Executive Director and Director. All other employees, staff or volunteers are employed or selected by the Director, with input from the Board or Officers of the Organization as required.
  • Secure funds for the ongoing operation of the facility, including programming, and future development of the Organization.
  • Monitor the financial affairs of the Organization, in accordance with acceptable accounting practices and policy.
  • Maintain the facility in a reasonable state of repair.
